It is with great sadness that the family of Sherman Arthur Mansfield Palmer, 83, of Dean’s Corner, announce his passing on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Sherman was born February 25, 1940, on his grandparents’ Windermere Farm in First Peninsula with a view of Lunenburg’s back harbour and the Lunenburg Academy. Until the age of 11 years, he lived in Morristown with his parents, the late Vera (Fritze) and Lorimer Palmer. Following the death of his grandfather, Fritze, he returned to Windermere Farm where he spent the rest of his life milking cows and making hay.

He represented District 1 Municipality of Lunenburg as a councillor for 26 years following in his uncle and grandfather’s footsteps.

For many more years he showed cattle at the Bridgewater Exhibition, first with his Uncle Victor and then with his sons.

In his younger years he enjoyed relay racing and soccer. At the Lunenburg Bowling Alley he met his future wife, Valerie (Nelson). He was also a member of the Lunenburg Golf Club and the Lunenburg Curling Club. A highlight for many years was taking part in the annual Farmer’s Curling Bonspiel mostly held in Bridgetown. For the first time he attended he returned home with a prize for having been away first time on his own after marriage. Sherman was one of a kind, true jokester, you never knew what might come out of his mouth. Sherman was fondly known as the “Mayor of Lunenburg.” He was always up for a yarn with everyone he met.
