RISSER, William “Billy”

2023-05-19

After a long and full life, the family of William “Billy” Risser, 94, of Lunenburg, announces his passing on Friday, May 19, 2023, in Garden Lots.

Born in Lunenburg, Billy was the son of the late Adolphus and Mabel (Pyke) Risser.

Billy started his working life at an early age with several local companies and with Simpson’s in Halifax, joined the US Army and served in the Korean War. Returning to Lunenburg, he spent the remainder of his working life with Lunenburg Foundry and Engineering and National Sea Products, in various roles.

An active member of the community, Billy was involved over the years with the Lunenburg Curling Club, Bluenose Golf Club, Lunenburg Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #23, Lunenburg. He participated in many activities and served on the Board of Directors for all these organizations.

Billy enjoyed “tinkering” with many hobbies, including model trains, coin and stamp collecting, boat building and carpentry projects, enjoyed working on indoor and outdoor projects at the home he shared with Barbara for 60 years, and at their vacation properties. In later years, folks in Lunenburg will remember Billy’s regular adventures on his scooter to the waterfront, the Sawpit Wharf, the Legion and Curling Club, including a recent Christmas parade and Remembrance Day service.

Billy is the last surviving member of his immediate family and is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara in 2021; brothers Emerald and Roderick; sister Diane; and half-siblings Evangeline and Dawson Wilkie.

A graveside service is planned in June at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg with a celebration of life at the Lunenburg Yacht Club. A time and date will be announced shortly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Billy’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Poppy Fund of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23, Lunenburg.

A special thanks to Gale Fullerton who gave her time and attention to Billy and Barbara so they could stay comfortably in their home during their last years.
