2020-11-07

94, of Lunenburg, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. Born in Bangalor, India, she was a daughter of the late Wylam Ralph Greatorex and Ethel Lancey (Baker) King. Mary painted in watercolour for over 70 years. She painted her last painting when she was 89. She was a very successful artist having sold more than 1000 paintings in her career. She studied privately with Gladys Best, R.W.A., in Devon, England and then at the Walsall College of Arts and Design. She painted land and seascapes in the traditional English style using a limited palette of 4 to 5 colours for each scene, thus setting the tone and atmosphere. She belonged to many art societies in the UK and, since coming to Nova Scotia in 1970, she had been a member of the Annapolis Royal Arts Council, the Chester Heritage Society and Gallery and the Lunenburg Heritage Society, which started the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society. Her work has been exhibited in various parts of Nova Scotia. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth (Rodney MacKay) Brown, Mahone Bay; son, Edmund Brownless, Frankfurt, Germany; grandson, André Stoll-Brownless and brother Hubert (Ann) King, BC. Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Basil, brothers Philip and Willard (Bill) and sister Jean. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg. In keeping with Mary’s wishes there is to be no funeral service at this time. A memorial service with her favourite music and hymns will take place later next year. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg or the Lunenburg Art Gallery, would be appreciated by the family. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
