Age 76, of Bridgewater, NS, passed away with his children by his side in the Cardiac Unit at Halifax Infirmary on February 2, 2023, due to congestive heart failure.
He is predeceased by parents George and Ruth McCarthy, sisters Betty and Marilyn and brother Richard.
Herb is survived by sister, Margo; son, Chris; daughter, Trena; and grandchildren Sarah and Callum who he loved dearly.
Herb’s early days were spent working in the tobacco fields of Tillsonburg, ON, until he returned to Bridgewater where he spent most of his working years with the Department of Transportation. Anyone who knew him, would say he loved to have fun and often played by his own rules. He loved to hunt, day and night, and would always have a story about how the “big one” got away. Every summer he looked forward to the South Shore Exhibition and could be found on the bleachers watching a good horse or ox pull. While rough around the edges, he had a heart of gold and always tried to find ways to help others.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax. In keeping with Herb’s wishes there will be no visitation. A private gathering with close family and friends will be held to celebrate his life.
A huge thank you to the South Shore Regional ICU team and the Halifax Infirmary Cardiac team for their kindness and compassion.
