BANFIELD, Eli John

1925-2019. It is with great sadness that the family of Eli John Banfield, 94 of Bridgewater announces his passing on Saturday November 23, 2019 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Bay L’Argent, Fortune Bay, Newfoundland, Eli was the son of the Eli Banfield Sr. and Sarah (Thornhill) Banfield, and moved to Halifax in 1940. He began dory fishing with Captain Cleveland from Western Shore at age 15 on the MacDonald, then with Captain Atwood Parks on the Margaret B. Tanner and with Captain Perry Conrad on the Cape LaHave. Eli then went to at Fairview Round House looking after the steam engines and was also a waiter in the dining car on the C.N. train from Halifax to Montreal. He retired after 23 years working for Riverport Seafoods. Active within his community, Eli was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Middle LaHave, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 24, Bridgewater for 44 years, and the LaHave River Ramblers Square Dancers for many years. He enjoyed music jams and seniors lunch at Sobeys. Eli is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley (Walters) and son, Christopher Banfield (Jessica) of Blockhouse. He was predeceased by his parents and twin baby girls.
