SHAID Tree Animal Shelter

Here at SHAID Tree Animal Shelter our focus is cats and dogs. But early this month upon arrival to work, we found two cat carriers neatly dropped over the fence. We discovered a light brown momma rabbit in one and her seven black kits in the other.

It's been awhile since we had rabbits here at the shelter, so we issued a plea to the public for some rabbit food and hay. Within a few hours, three individuals had brought in rabbit food, hay and veggies. Several people had also issued e-transfers to help us get everything they needed.

The same day, we had three more phone calls about rabbits needing help – we were able to direct them to rabbit rescues (Honey's Bunnies Rabbit Rescue, Urban Tails, and 10,000 Carrots Rabbit Rescue are a few in the province and can all be found on Facebook).

The next day two young ladies arrived with three more rabbits; they had been dumped near their yard and had taken refuge under their deck, hiding from a few area dogs. They had no way to get them to the rabbit rescues and were worried for the rabbits' safety.

If you're interested in providing a home for a very friendly bunny (or two), they do make great pets. For children, they make wonderful 4-H projects.

We are gearing up for our third annual SHAID Tree Lottery, which will be running from the beginning of September to the end of November. First prize is $25,000 cash, second is a 2023 Honda ATV, and third is a $500 shopping spree at Giant Tiger. Tickets are $25 each or two for $50, and can be purchased at Giant Tiger, Sobeys, Shur-Gain Feeds N Needs, Bridgewater Honda Powerhouse, and SHAID, or by calling us at 902-543-4849.

Only 4,000 tickets will be printed! This lottery is our largest annual fundraiser and all proceeds go towards helping animals in need. Yes, sometimes even bunnies.
