Musique Royale presents a trio of upcoming concerts

SOUTH SHORE - Musique Royale has a trio of concerts coming up that will be sure to delight music fans.

Today (Aug. 30) at noon, there is a free concert being performed by the duo of cellist Anne Janelle and ukuleles James Hill. The concert will be held at the St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg. A freewill offering will go to support the St. John's music program.

On Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. at Cecilia's Retreat in Mahone Bay, the Ensemble Constantinople will be performing, featuring Ablaye Cissoko on kora and vocals; Kiya Tabassian on setar and vocals and Patrick Graham on percussion.

The ensemble "is inspired by the ancient city illuminating the East and the West. Constantinople was founded in 1998 by its artistic director Kiya Tabassian," according a news release, describing the type of music they perform.

"Since its founding, the ensemble promotes the creation of new works incorporating musical elements o divers musical traditions around the world."

On Sept. 6, the power trio from Montreal, Bùmarang, will be in St. Barnabas Church in Blue Rocks.

Bùmarang is Scots Gaelic for 'boomerang' - meaning "they throw themselves into the musical past, and like a boomerang, return with a passion and primal energy."

The Celtic, Montreal-based trio, features Dave Gossage on flute/whistle; Kate Bevan-Baker, fiddle and vocals; and Sara Pagé on harp.

The stop in Blue Rocks is one of six on their Nova Scotia tour which also includes performances in Yarmouth, Digby, Arichat, Christmas Island and Bedford.

They were nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award (2022) as the Instrumental Group of the Year.

Individually, they have won postdoctoral awards, played for Queen Elizabeth II, performed a the Junos has have been nominated for Juno and Academy Awards.

They are currently working on releasing their second album. Their first, Echo Land, was released in 2021.

One other note...the concert, Across the Waters, featuring cellist India Gailey and bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly, originally scheduled for Aug. 18, will now be held Sept. 5 beginning at 8 p.m. The concert is a free event, but those wishing to attend at Cecilia's Retreat are asked to reserve a spot by emailing barbara.butler@ns.sympatico.ca. Donations are being accepted to support the Mahone Bay Islands Conservation Association.
