Through absolutely no fault of their own, black cats have been labelled as undesirable for centuries. Maybe because they aren't as photogenic as other colored cats, or due to old, outdated superstitions that they are evil, or because they bring bad luck?

Even if most people no longer believe the historic superstitions related to black cats, it still impacts their adoption rates so much so that they get adopted 50 per cent less than cats with other coats in many shelters across the nation. Thankfully, SHAID Tree Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter; therefore that sad statistic is not applicable here.

We would like to share several reasons why black cats (also known as mini house panthers) are simply the best. For one, black cats are cultural icons! Remember Salem from Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, and Binx from Hocus Pocus? How about Kitty Softpaws from Puss in Boots and Sylvester from Looney Tunes?

Every morning when you leave for work and you're struggling to "lint roll' off all your cat's fur? With a black cat, there's no need to get the fur off your dress pants – no one can see it anyway! And that leaves you even more time to cuddle your furbaby. And did we mention how slimming the color black is?

We currently have several black cats and kittens looking for homes at our little shelter. From several three-month-old kittens (both males and females, both longhaired and short) to sweet Licorice, an eight-month-old shorthaired, curious and cuddly boy, to Phoebe, a shy but sweet five-month-old girl, to Harley, an 11-year-old longhaired, talkative and demanding senior – we have no shortage of selection of black beauties.

While you're here, don't forget to say hello to Crumpet, our mascot and CEO of SHAID; he will tell you all about why black cats are simply the best; and he would know!
