LIVERPOOL - A labour group with local roots plans a day of music, food and a showcase of organizations to mark the upcoming Labour Day holiday.

The free event, open to the public, takes place between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Privateer Park off Henry Hensey Drive on Sept. 4.

"This should be an event not to miss," Don Calhoun of the South Shore Labour Council (SSLC) said in an email to LighthouseNOW. The SSLC "will be providing free hot dogs and beverages. Members from Lunenburg-Queens Special Olympics will be hosting the food booth."

In a poster provided, the SSLC said there will be face painting, animal balloons and singing with Johnny Lake "and many vendors to browse."

In the email, Calhoun said the SSLC sponsored a public Labour Day event in past years.

"Many organizations are participating with the view of getting their information out, perhaps fundraising, perhaps recruiting valuable volunteers, networking with others and in general having a good time."

Barring a major storm, the event goes rain or shine.

Labour Day is a statutory public holiday that occurs on the first Monday in September. It's origins in Canada date back to 1894 but Labour Day took on special significance during a protest in 1872 involving thousands of workers marching in solidarity with striking printers in Ontario. The movement led to legislation confirming the legality of unions.
