LUNENBURG - Capturing 68 per cent of votes cast, local businessman and former three-term civic politician Jamie Myra returns to local government as this town's mayor-elect, winning the Aug. 12 byelection with ease over local yacht club manager Gale Fullerton.

Campaigning on a message of fostering stronger communication links between citizens and elected representatives, Myra received 811 votes to Fullerton's 377.

He'll be sworn into office on Sept. 12. Deputy Mayor Peter Mosher continues his role as acting mayor until this time.

Byelection voter turnout was 59 per cent. The percentage was 64 per cent for the 2020 municipal election.

In addition to working to establish better ties between council and the voters who put them there, Myra promised to try and pause unpopular government positions on recent public land policy and property development issues.

In a statement posted on social media, Myra thanked supporters, saying he "looks forward to representing the people and voices of Lunenburg."

He replaces Matt Risser, who quit two-and-a-half years into his first term, on May 9.

Risser announced his departure April 10, telling readers of his written statement, posted online, he was moving away to pursue a career opportunity. His exit came at a time when elected officials were under fire for stances on development policy, land transaction intentions, food truck rules, and their overall approach to carrying out recommendations contained in a community planning report.

Meanwhile, Fullerton, seeking public office for the first time, committed to restoring good working relationships among all concerned, ensuring citizens are informed and have a chance to be heard, understood and acknowledged.

"What an honour it is for me to have the support of those who voted for me, and what a great experience it has been to run for public office. Voters have given the mayor elect and town council a long list of priorities to tackle, and I wish them well," Fullerton posted in an online message on social media.

"To the people of Lunenburg, your voice is in your vote, and you have spoken. Congratulations to my opponent and his campaign team. Best wishes for your success, Mr. Myra."

Local MLA and cabinet minister Susan Corkum-Greek congratulated Myra on his win.

"I look forward to working with he and town council to do all we can to sustain and grow our community while creating a more cohesive relationship with citizens," she posted online on social media.

She also extended appreciation to Fullerton for her efforts.

"I also believe that in having a race, as opposed to an acclamation, citizens had an opportunity to learn where the candidates sat on important issues and that this serves the democratic progress well."

Myra won't be serving a full term as the next municipal elections are slated for October 2024.
