Equipment drive for front line health workers

The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore has launched a fund dedicated toward purchasing equipment for front line healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19 at Bridgewater's South Shore Regional Hospital and Lunenburg's Fishermen's Memorial Hospital.

Called the Front Line Fund, its aim is to raise $91,000 for equipment such as transport stretchers and mattresses, vital signs monitors, dividers with trolleys and stethoscopes.

According to the foundation's executive director, Arleen Stevens, the charity has been looking for ways to be of service to the healthcare teams at the hospitals during COVID-19 preparations.

"With the help of hospital staff, a list of necessary equipment was developed and the Foundation said yes immediately to funding the COVID-19 equipment. We want to make the work of our hospital staff and physicians just a bit easier as we all come together to fight this pandemic. At a time where people may feel powerless, this is an opportunity for them to help in the fight against COVID-19," Stevens explained in a prepared statement.

The additional equipment is needed as the hospitals' staff are attempting to limit any potential spread of COVID-19 by keeping each piece of equipment to just a few patients.

In a promotional letter outlining the fundraising campaign, Dr. Greg McNally, South Shore Regional's medical director of emergency srvices, praised the way the South Shore community bands together in "times of crisis and uncertainty." He invited donors to "join the front line," adding that "together, a healthy future is in our hands."
