LOHNES (Barnhill), H. Audrey

2017-10-09

H. Audrey Lohnes (Barnhill), age 92, of Mahone Bay, passed away peacefully Monday, October 9, 2017, at Harbour View Haven, Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. Audrey was born in Halifax, where she attended Tower Road School and loved to swim from Black Rock Beach to Georges Island or at the family cottage in the Dartmouth Narrows. She was a daughter of the late Clarence and Dora (MacDougall) Barnhill. She finished high school at age 15 and after graduating from Miss Murphy’s Business College, she worked at Nova Scotia Light & Power and later at TUNS where she was the Assistant Registrar until her marriage. After raising her five children, Audrey began a career in Real Estate and would later own and operate The Red Door Bed & Breakfast. Among her volunteer interests were Home and School, Girl Guides of Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Festival and the VON. She was a member of Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay. A voracious reader, she was thrilled when bookmobile service came to Mahone Bay and made certain each of her five children became library card holders the first week the bus rolled into town. Audrey and Phil loved travelling in their retirement years. Prior to trips, Audrey researched their destinations and often knew more about each location than a seasoned tour guide. An avid crypto quote and crossword puzzler, she was sought out by puzzlers from all over Lunenburg County for confirmation of answers for the New York Times Saturday morning crossword. She is survived by daughters, Margaret (Clare Hubley), Christine (Peter Mason), Suzanne (Ken Croft); son, Andrew (Angela Greek); grandchildren, Jared & Andrew Browne; Daniel, Samuel and Jacob Croft; Emma Mason; Max and Jack Lohnes. Great-grandchildren, Micah, Harmonee, Arilyn, Kassidy, Lacie and Closon Browne and Veronica Croft. She was predeceased by her husband, Philip L.K. Lohnes; son, Philip James Lohnes; sister, Edith Barnhill; brother, Colin Barnhill. A graveside service will take place 2:30 pm, Saturday, October 14 at Park Cemetery, Mahone Bay, followed by a reception at Trinity United Church, 101 Edgewater St., Mahone Bay. Memorial donation may be made to Trinity United Church; Mahone Bay Fire Department; Royal Canadian Legion Br. No. 49, Mahone Bay or SHAID Tree Animal Shelter. Our family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the welcoming staff at Harbour View Haven, Home for Special Care, for the wonderful care Mom received for the past four years. Cremation and arrangements entrusted to the care of Mahone Funeral Home, P.O. Box 200, 32 Parish St., Mahone Bay, NS B0J 2E0 (902-624-8241).
