It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Murray Zwicker, 84 of West LaHave, announces his passing on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at home. Born in Newport, Hants County, he was the son of the late Bernard and Christine (Gillis) Zwicker. Don lived a life of public service that spanned some sixty years. He retired from the federal government in 1988 as District Manager for Nova Scotia with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, having worked in various other government departments in Halifax, Ottawa and Amherst. That same year he received the nomination as candidate for the Liberal Party in the provincial election of 1988. In 1991 he ran in the municipal election and was elected councillor in his home district. He would go on to win every subsequent election, spanning a period of twenty-five years, also serving two terms as deputy mayor. He was elected to the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities, serving as its president in the year 2002-2003. Parallel to his elected service, Don held a number of volunteer positions: President of the Lunenburg Board, Chair of Ark Industries, Regional President of the Red Cross, Chair of the South Shore Library Board, Chair of the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Board, Chair of Clean Nova Scotia, and as recently as last year, Chair of Hillside Pines Home for Special Care. He also served on the board of LaHave Manor, Harbour View Haven, the Riverport Board of Trade, and the Municipal Finance Corporation. In 2012 he was honoured to be nominated for and receive Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Don was active in the Masonic Lodge in Lunenburg and was an Elder of Trinity United Church in Rose Bay. Although he took the game up rather late in life, Don enjoyed the game of golf and was a member of Lunenburg Golf Club. He and Frances enjoyed many trips over the years to various time share resorts around North America as well as the occasional ocean cruise. Don is survived by his devoted wife, Frances Jewel Dickson, , son, Barry (Erica), Ottawa; brothers, Bernard, Valley, NS Charles, Ottawa, granddaughters, Crystal Simser (Vancouver), Jamie Lee Anderson (Ottawa) and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughters, Elaine and Lori and a brother, Robert. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Donald Murray Zwicker of West LaHave, who passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020, will be held Sunday, October 3, 2021 2 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg. Interment will follow at the St. Croix Cemetery in St. Croix. COVID-19 restrictions with masks to apply and seating is limited, so please call the funeral home at 902-634-3942 if you wish to attend. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the QE II Health Service Foundation or the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore.
