It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Louise Baker, 83, of Lunenburg, announces her passing on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Bridgewater, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Emily (Fraser) Hirtle. Barbara started her working career in Lunenburg at MA Hatt Meat Market, Stedman’s and Eatons/ Simpson’s Stores and then went on to work with Irving Oil for 28 years. A faithful member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Barbara had served over the years on church council and supported the many activities within the church. She has been a lifetime member of the IODE, served on the Martin’s Brook Cemetery Association and the Princess Inlet Property Owners Association. Her greatest passions were spending time at home with her family, especially her adored grandchildren, and using her hands to create beautiful works of art, as a talented knitter, rug hooking, needle point, ceramics and pottery, or just having a good game of cards with her card club group. Her love of life, family, friends and the community at large were so important to her. Barbara’s quiet courage, strength of spirit, creativity and sense of humour will be carried forward by all those that knew and loved her. Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Gilbert, daughter, Valerie (Paul) Burley, Guelph, Ontario; son, Peter (Paula), Sunny Brook; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Baker (Gary Moore), Mount Uniacke; grandchildren, Samantha, Alexander (Ceilagh MacDonald), Andrew and Stephen Baker, Matthew and Daniel Baker, Joshua (Chelsea Botsford) and Benjamin Burley and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, the former, Honourable Michael Baker. Funeral service for Barbara was held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Rick Pryce, officiated. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the Lunenburg County VON. She was a mother to three and grandmother to eight but mothered countless more. She had a gentle, caring way and lived a life full of love. The family would like to thank the extraordinary Dr. Kelly, the caring staff of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, the compassionate VON and Lunenburg County Home Support Services. A special mention to Pastor Rick Pryce, organist Annette Collins, the choir and Fellowship Group of Zion’s Lutheran Church. Thank you for warmly guiding the family through this difficult time and providing outstanding refreshments. Thank you to Deanna Gear and the staff of Seaside Flowers for the beautiful flower arrangements. Also, thank you to Darlene Acker and Heather Acker of Shades of U and Veronica Aulenbach for making Mom happy and beautiful over the years.
