2020-03-23

It is with great sadness that the family of Steven Allister Varner, 62 of East LaHave, announces his passing on Monday, March 23, 2020. Born in New Germany, Steve was the son of the late Maurice and Ruby (Joudrey) Varner. Steve started his working career at the Lunenburg Foundry and then went on to work in the construction business working for Power Vac; M. Walters and Sons; Mitch Hirtle Painting, John Buck and then in recent years operating his own business, Steve’s Handyman and Cutting Edge. He always had a mind for problem solving and put this to great use when repairing the many old homes of Lunenburg County. His most favorite places were the woods with chainsaw in hand, and fishing on his favorite lake. He was a pillar of the community, spending many hours helping at Riverport Elementary School with various fairs, concerts, gardening and constructing outbuildings. He was a natural teacher, spontaneously gathering children around him wherever he went to teach them basic life lessons and how to be kind. He was a comedian, making people laugh wherever he went with his special type of humour. He was a true friend, always making time for anyone in need. He was a father. Kind, compassionate, patient, loving. Always trying. He was a grandfather who came most alive when looking upon the faces of his grandchildren. Steve is survived by his wife, MaryAnn (Kaizer); daughter, Gillian (Jerimah Noonan), Conquerall Bank; sons, Justin, Bridgewater, Jordan, Bridgewater; step-sons, Derrick Rockwell (April) and Devin (Rachel) Rockwell; grandchildren, Xander, Wendy, Jayden, Spencer and Destinee; sisters, Margaret (Douglas) Selig; Simpson’s Corner; Ivy Varner, Copeland Road; brothers, Charles (Lavinia) Pleasant River; Kenneth (Christine), East Dalhousie and Carl (Donna), Halifax; several nieces and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his 1st wife, Wendy; sisters, Wilma, Faye and an infant sister. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A gathering to celebrate Steve’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Neurology Department of the QE II, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to any other charity.
