It is with great sadness that the family of Madeline “Maddie” Avora Allen, 99, of Lunenburg and formerly of Garden Lots, announces her passing on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Ridgewood Assisted Living, Bridgewater.

Born in Indian Point, on April 6, 1924, Maddie was the daughter of the late Orren and Myra (Hyson) Hiltz.

Maddie began her working life at Hatt’s Meat Market in Lunenburg and after five years, she met Ronald Allen and soon after were married on November 16, 1949, residing most of their married life in Garden Lots, a community she truly loved.

Maddie was a stay-at-home mom while raising her four children. Over the years, she helped in her husband’s trucking business and Texaco Oil business and operated Bluenose Men’s and Boy’s Wear and later worked at her best friend’s shoe store, B&F Footwear for many years.

Maddie was a creative woman who enjoyed sewing, making clothes, and quilting for her children and grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling, socializing with friends, playing Rummoli, other card games and bingo. She was a natural in the kitchen and was well known for her baked breads, rolls, delicious pies, tasty sandwiches, and awesome chowder. Her love of cooking led her to working as a cook at the Bluenose Lodge, Lunenburg Yacht Club, and numerous catering jobs in the Lunenburg area. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and a faithful member of the Alexandra Rebekah Lodge # 22.

Her love of life, family, friends, and the community at large, were so important to her. Maddie’s quiet courage, strength of spirit, creativity and sense of humour will be carried forward by those who knew and loved her. She was a golden thread of love spun invisibly through all our hearts and lives.

Maddie is survived by daughters, Donna (Robert) Heisler, Sherwood Park, AB; Sheila Falkenham-Patterson, Halifax; Nancy (Tom) Pittman, Lunenburg; and son, Ron (Agnes) Allen, Guelph, ON; grandchildren, Stacey (Laurianne); Tara (Dwayne); Ashley, Matthew (Amanda); Amy (Dan); TJ (Dawn); Jennifer (Palmer); twelve great-grandchildren; and brother, Raymond (Shirley) Hiltz, Mahone Bay.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ronald in 2019.

A celebration of the life will be held Friday, June 30, 2023, at 1 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Highway 3, Lunenburg. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
