MARTIN, Gordon Henry "Bud"

2018-10-10

Son of the late John Henry Martin and Daisy Hedderson. Bud was the loving husband of 37 years to Goldie Martin (Tompkins); step-father to Linda Salek (Fred), New York, and Wayne Tompkin (Donna), New Elm; and father of Anne (predeceased 2011), Barbara, Lyn, John and Jamie. Grandpa Bud had nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. These included, in Nova Scotia: beloved grandson Kim Tompkin (Dawn); great grandchildren, Kyle Tompkin (Sarah) and Hollee; and great-great grandson Wyatt Tompkin. Bud has a surviving brother Harold, and sister Margaret-Ann, and five predeceased siblings: Ivy, Edward, Ruth, June and Rosemary. He was "Bud" to all who knew him. Bud grew up in Copper Cliff and worked as a carpenter at INCO. He served overseas in Scotland from 1939 to 1945, first in the Canadian Armed Forces and then with the Canadian Forestry Corps. He was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion with Branch 224 in Copper Cliff. He and Goldie moved to Broad Cove, NS in 1993 after his retirement from INCO. In 2015 they moved to the Ridgewood Retirement facility in Bridgewater where he could be found playing cribbage or crokinole, tapping and singing to the music, or just reminiscing about the good old days. Bud enjoyed a good life. For years he got up at 4 a.m. to go fishing out of Little Harbor with Paul Conrad, Cyril Bushen and others. His favourite pastimes were reading, playing Auction 45, and cribbage at the community center in Vogler’s Cove and later at Ridgewood, and attending the Thursday morning coffee gatherings at Wesley United Church in Petite Riviere. Bud was always ready for an adventure. The family wishes to thank all of you who sent sympathy cards and attended the celebration of life at The Ridgewood. We also thank Gwen Wamboldt, who cared for Bud for 13 years, Brian Stoodley and family who helped them over the years, Krista, Sarah and staff at Corkum Funeral Home, the Ridgewood Retirement community staff for caring for Bud in these last few years, and Rev. Vivian Moores for her empathy and leadership in presiding over the celebration of Bud’s life and his interment. We will forever miss Bud’s infectious laugh and easy-going nature. Donations may be made to the Wesley United Church in Petite Riviere where Bud was a member for many years.
