FOULKES, Donna Belle

2020-09-08

We are saddened to announce the passing of our amazing mother Donna Belle Foulkes on September 8, 2020, ten days shy of her 76th birthday. Mum was born September 18, 1944 in Halifax to Donald and Patricia Renton. She spent her formative years in the community of Spryfield where her parents owned several businesses. Donna is survived by her son David Foulkes (Heather) and daughter Susan Foulkes (Jason). She is also survived by her brother Thomas Renton (Jeanette), her grandchildren Spencer and Quinn Foulkes, nephews Neil and Eric Renton and first husband Edward Foulkes (Cecilia) and stepdaughters Jennifer, Lynn and Elizabeth. After a near 20 year career in the Anatomy Department at Dalhousie University mum returned to the classroom, where she completed a Law degree and a Masters of Public Administration at Dalhousie. She then embarked on her second career in the Justice system. Upon her retirement she was the Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Judiciary at the Supreme Court in Halifax. Mum’s will and determination was unmatched, while raising two children she became a certified scuba diver, an aerobics and yoga instructor and even published her own community newspaper “The Forest Hills News“. Mum enjoyed travel and toured Japan and Europe both with friends and on her own. She even flew her then 90-year-old father over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter touching down for a quick lunch and a glass of champagne. She took great pleasure in sailing on the Lahave River where her family homestead was located. Mum sat on numerous boards and commissions in Nova Scotia including the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission and the Board of Directors of the Bide Awhile Animal Shelter. She adopted several animals over the years who became her beloved companions. In accordance with Mum’s wishes, her ashes will be spread both beneath the grand sugar maples her father planted in Middle Lahave, and upon the gentle waves of the Lahave River. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Bide Awhile Animal Shelter would be greatly appreciated. There will be a small service for family and close friends at a later date. To the staff and nurses of 8.1 at the Halifax Infirmary site for their kindness and compassion with a special thank you to nurses Elizabeth, Kass, and Jeremy. Peace be with you Donna Belle as you explore the infinite secrets of the universe. Love David and Susan
