COOK, Dr. Walter F. Cook

2020-08-02

Age 92 years, Sunday, August 2, 2020 at Highview Residences, London. Beloved husband of Marguerite Cook (nee Fergusson), predeceased 2016. Dear son of Frank and Frieda (nee Conrad) Cook, both predeceased. Dear brother of William Cook (Amy) of Kamloops, BC. Loving uncle of Kevin Cook (Candace), Kimberley Blight, Jeanne Beverly-Cook (Larry), William Beverly (Nancy) and Robert Beverly (Karen) and their families. Walter was born in Rose Bay, Nova Scotia, and graduated from Lunenburg Academy before attending Dalhousie University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947 and Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1950. Wally and Marguerite married in 1951 and immediately moved to Sudbury, Ontario, where he started his dental practice. He was an active member of the community from the time of his arrival in Sudbury. He was Past President of the Sudbury and District Dental Society. He was a member for 55 years and Past President of the Kiwanis Club. He spent 44 years on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and was active for many years in St. Andrew’s United Church. A voracious reader with a strong interest in history, and an art and music aficionado, he was also a keen sportsman. Wally played golf for more than 70 years and was a member of Idylwylde Golf and Country Club for much of that time. For 15 years he trained for and ran marathons and half-marathons. An avid skier well into his 80s, he would ski non-stop from morning until dusk to get in as many runs as possible – and the most value from his lift ticket. He was an exceptionally accomplished, gentle man who touched the lives of many, and he will be missed. At the family’s request, there will be no visitation or service. Donations to the Dr. Walter F. Cook Bursary, Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University (https://alumniapps2.dal.ca/giving/index) would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.
