RITCHIE, Todd Hunter

2021-11-10

It is with great sadness that the family of Todd Hunter Ritchie, 69 of Halifax, previously of Oakland, Lunenburg County, share in the loss of him on November 10, 2021, after a brief illness. Todd was born in Norwood, MA on March 2,1952 to Mary (McCarty) Ritchie of Norwood, MA and Joseph Gordon Ritchie of Lunenburg, NS.

He is survived by his sons Jason and Ryan, siblings, Bonnie J. Ritchie, Martha Ritchie Kinley (Peter), David Gordon Ritchie (Wanda), Peter Jason Ritchie (Julia). Nieces and nephews: Jennifer, Adam, Megan, Joseph, John, Emma, and Harriet.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Brian “Scott” Ritchie and sister Linda Louise Youden.

Todd moved to Oakland with his family at 14, after spending all summer vacations on Sheep Island in Mahone Bay. His summers on the island prepared him for a lifetime of boating and shoreline activities. He built his first boat at 15 with neighbor and friend David Kaulback, called the ODA. Todd had vocal and guitar lessons at a young age and could play many instruments expertly. He soloed in a couple of different choirs performing Ave Maria at several events. Todd was a happy-go-lucky student and was often the life of the party. He helped form and played in several bands while attending Mahone Bay High School. One band, The Sealed Door, travelled to various schools in the county playing school dances. The events were often the talk of the school yards for days after. He was integral in the formation of Strawberry Jam Foundation, a local charity dedicated to raising funds for local children’s needs through musical events.

He graduated in 1970 and attended Acadia University. He married Lynn Field in 1973. They had two sons and lived in two different old houses that they renovated together. They had a flair for color and design. They divorced. In 1973 he and his brother Scott pioneered the opening of “Ritchie Rentals and Sales” in Wileville, NS. Todd was a perfectionist in life and his craftsmanship was highly admired and respected as a cabinet maker and designer of custom wood applications. He owned and operated his own company “Hunter Reproductions". He designed many custom wooden furniture inserts and unique bars and had a flair for staining wood with his own natural concoctions. He treated old wooden floors making them warm and central to a home’s decor. Todd enjoyed the outdoors and was an impeccable landscaper. He enjoyed property management for several clients. He could repair anything and enjoyed the challenge of making it work and look better too. Todd loved good political banter. His passion on a subject could be measured in the volume he used.

Thanks go out to the nursing staff and physicians in the oncology department at the VG.

The family acknowledges with undying gratitude the friendship, encouragement and support afforded by Blair McMullin during recent months.

Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers Todd would appreciate you to please plant a tree. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
