The province's Department of Lands and Forestry requested the help of Western Shore volunteer firefighters August 8 to ensure a blaze that consumed woodland near Vaughans Lake is fully extinguished. The fire was reported off Rye Piece Road, and area north of Highway 103, and required assistance from four other departments.

One of those department was Martins River, which was also called August 7 to help Mahone Bay firefighters douse a woods fire in Clearland. The fire, off the Woodstock Road, was called in at about 2 p.m. and scorched less than a hectare of terrain.

Two other departments helped put out that blaze.
