Salmon composted after highway spill

A semi-trailer ran off the road near Port L'Hebert, overturned and spilled its load of live salmon into the ditch on January 17 at around 3 p.m.
Joel Richardson, vice-president of public relations for Cooke Aquaculture, which is based in New Brunswick and owns the fish, said in an email the transporter was a "N.S. trucking contractor doing work for our Shoreland Transport division."
Richardson said that all of the spilled salmon had to be composted.
Environment Canada was contacted as there is a freshwater river in the vicinity that runs into the Atlantic Ocean. According to an RCMP news release on the incident, no salmon made it to the river.
The Nova Scotia Department of Environment also was advised as the semi-trailer had to have its fuel drained prior to being towed.
The cause of the single-vehicle collision was under investigation at the time of writing.
