Profits taking precedence over environment

A whole-hearted thank you for publishing Professor J. Tom Webb's superb article in your June 9, 2021 issue on the dangers of clear-cutting forests for heating with pulp wood, and the disregard for its effects on global warming.

Of course, the First Nations people have been demonstrating and warning us about our blind colonial aggression towards the land, the woods and the water, which we consider our property, for a long time.

A lot of our children and grandchildren are also recognizing the mess we're leaving them with. Greta Thunberg is an eloquent representative of this generation, trying to turn things around before it's too late.

If we let ourselves see, everywhere we look, short-sighted corporate greed tends to be the problem. How about the gasoline-powered vehicles we all drive? Don't they contribute to global warming? I am dismayed every time my husband and I drive by what used to be several acres of healthy, mixed-growth forest on the outskirts of Mahone Bay, which has been shaved to the bone and left totally bald for the building of what – a prison? No, a nursing home for seniors! Private, of course. Profit, as usual, is the ultimate aim.

What about the well-being of the residents and the staff, who might have been cheered and refreshed by looking out on the branches of trees waving in the breeze, or hearing birds singing and chirping in them, or pecking at seeds on the ground?

Forget it! The grass would grow and you'd have to hire grounds-keepers to tend the trees and mow the grass. That costs money and that's all that seems to matter.

Call for support of Lunenburg planning strategy

Re: Council's approval of our new Municipal Planning Strategy and associated bylaws.

These important policies will provide direction and a framework for our town's infrastructure, land use, housing, heritage preservation, culture and business development.

The new Strategy didn't just happen - many people contributed. Mayor Matt Risser provided vision and leadership. Project Lunenburg Steering Committee provided direction. Our recently elected Town Council has shepherded these policies and bylaws through various stages. The Strategy is ultimately based on the input of hundreds of residents through surveys, community workshops and online forums.

We urge Lunenburg residents to show their support for our new Municipal Planning Strategy. During the month of June, please contact Town Council members and say, "Yes!"

Sincerely,

Will Brooks, Blayne Collins, Faune Creaser, Dina De Wit, Amy Funk, Deborah Glassman, Theo Heffler,Nathalie Irving, Lorne Johannson, Daniel Keeler, Duncan Kroll, Letty McFall, Tom McFall, Marion Moore, Wilfred Moore, Phyllis Jacklin, Teresa Quilty, Paula Rennie, Jane Ritcey, Marc Thibaudeau, Megan Williams, Marilyn Zinowki
