Memorial bench honouring popular Beach Meadows resident

A granite bench will be installed at Beach Meadows beach in memory of Karla Colp who died January 10 at the age of 53 after a battle with cancer.

Her long-time friend, Gwen Oickle, had reached out to the Region of Queens Municipality (RQM) asking for permission to place a bench in honour of the popular Beach Meadows resident at the municipally-owned waterfront.

"She was well-known by many people in South Queens for her heart of gold and big smile," commented RQM Mayor Darlene Norman. "She also always jumped forward to help community groups when needed."

Often called Mrs. C., Colp was a keen photographer and regularly went to the popular beach to take pictures. Her husband, Kendell, and daughter, Kennedy, helped place the bench in a spot she often visited.

The bench will be inscribed with the saying, "Fearless is about living life to the fullest in spite of being afraid."

The municipality occasionally receives requests to plant a tree or place a bench as a memorial for people, and the region is willing to accommodate those requests for the most part, according to Norman.

"A memorial bench is a lovely gift for people to use, sit and reflect," the mayor said. "We are pleased that we are able to honour Karla through Gwen's actions."

Oickle started a GoFundMe page to raise money to cover the cost of the bench, and within two days last week more than $2,000 had been donated.

New name, tenant for former call centre

The building and property located at 54 Harley Umphrey Drive in Liverpool has been known as the call centre building and property since it was built in 2002.

The latest tenant, HGS, vacated the municipally-owned building in March 2020 and the search for new tenants began.

At the May 25 Region of Queens Municipality council meeting, councillors considered a recommendation to officially name the property the Liverpool Business Development Centre. And it was made known that a new tenant will occupy the 446-square-metre building - AC Belliveau Veinotte Inc. - for at least the next four years.

The firm currently operates at an office located at 7B Henry Hensey Drive in Liverpool, but had been looking to expand.

"It's great to see an investment like this in our community. We're very happy," said the region's mayor, Darlene Norman. "We're really pleased about having them come in, and pleased with Steve Burns, who is now looking after all of the contracts in our municipally-owned buildings."

Renovation work will be undertaken before the company occupies the building.

AC Belliveau Veinotte Inc. is a full-service CPA firm that offers a variety of services from bookkeeping and financial reporting to audits, tax and business consulting services.

The company was first established in 1998 in Bridgewater. As well as in that town, it now has offices in Liverpool, Chester, Shelburne, Barrington Passage and Halifax.
