National axe throwing championship bound for Liverpool

Hipsters, sharpen your axes.

Top ranked competitors from across Canada and Europe will converge on Liverpool, Nova Scotia on August 25 - 26, 2018 for the inaugural Canadian National Axe Throwing Championships, the Region of Queens Municipality announced on May 31.

The event, the first national championship in Lumberjack sports to be held in Nova Scotia, will be held in Liverpool's Centennial Park, overlooking the Mersey River, coordinated by North Nova Lumberjacks Society.

"Queens County has a rich forestry history, and council is pleased to welcome Canadian and international participants as they compete for top honours in axe throwing on August 25 -26, 2018 in Centennial Park, Liverpool, Nova Scotia," said David Dagley, Mayor of RQM.

"We are happy to be a sponsor of the Canadian National Axe Throwing Championships. Events of this nature build on Queens County's reputation as a host of unique, interesting, and successful events."

While axe-throwing recently has become the centrepiece of many hipster hangouts such as the Timber Lounge in Halifax, their plaid-shirted, black-bearded denizens are likely to find pretty tough competition at the championships.

Approximately 80 competitors are expected to take part in the two day competition, projected to draw approximately 1,000 daily spectators. Among the challengers are 10-15 European competitors, including world ranked athletes from Germany, Ireland and Sweden. Prizes will be awarded in men's and women's divisions.

"We are thrilled to be hosting this historical event and showcasing our beautiful province to axe throwers from all over the world. We are grateful to the community of Liverpool and the Region of Queens Municipality for their enthusiasm and support and look forward to hosting an exciting community event in August," said Ryan McIntyre, President and Founder of North Nova Lumberjacks Society.

North Nova Lumberjacks Society successfully hosted Nova Scotia Lumberjack Championships in 2016 and 2017, which were nationally televised. Promoting the sport of Lumberjack skills and its athletes, hosting elite level competitions, promoting the community, and contributing to the local economy through attracting spectators and competitors are the values of North Nova Lumberjack Society.
