Taking inspiration from her imagination, Ivy Coolen transformed passions of poetry and art into a 32-page colourful collection of material.

"I write a lot of poetry in notebooks, and I just love the colours of the places and the sights, and that's how I combine painting and poetry together," Coolen told LighthouseNOW in an interview.

Once the poems were finished, she created the images to correspond with the written work.

The book, titled Poetry of Sea and Sky, is published and distributed by Simms Settlement-based WindyWood Publishing.

The book's cover illustration is a salute to the wharf in her home community of Mill Cove, near Hubbards. The image also accompanies one of the book's 14 original poems, Home Sweet Home.

Her poems are short, which is to her liking in terms of what she's used to reading.

"I had a few poems based on city landscapes but I noticed I had a lot more of the ocean," she said of her reason for the subject matter. "I decided to go with the most, of a sky and ocean theme."

Coolen delved into poetry about seven years ago, looking for a way to express her life experiences. Painting began as a hobby in 2014.

Poetry of Sea and Sky is her first poetry book, but a text of recipes The Art of Baking, released a couple of years ago, was her first major published work.

Pat Thomas, who owns and operates WindyWood Publishing, said Coolen participated in a community-based skills education program and is "a remarkable young lady" who sells her books and art at local markets.

Coolen wasn't sure how she decided on what poetry and art material she wanted to see published in her latest book, but she knew what aspects she wanted to showcase.

"There's Peggy's Cove and Island View Restaurant [included] because I've been there more than other places," she said. "I've been there with family and friends."

Responses to Poetry of Sea and Sky are positive across the board.

"People enjoy it," Coolen explained. "They like that my artwork is colourful."

Three testimonials are published on the back cover.
