Responders sent to house fire in Middlewood

There were no reports of any serious injuries resulting from a May 6 house fire near Italy Cross. Emergency crews were initially dispatched to an address along Middlewood Diversion where a flue fire was reported, but firefighters arrived to find a working structure fire and smoke billowing from the eaves. Italy Cross-Middlewood-and-district volunteer firefighters received the alarm from dispatch just after 4 p.m. A number of neighbouring fire departments responded with personnel and tankers to provide extra help and water to smother the flames. There is no hydrant system in the area. It took nearly four hours before the blaze was considered extinguished.

Bridgewater reduces value level of portable toilet tender

A Pleasantville company secured a deal with Bridgewater to supply, install and maintain portable bathroom services at various public spaces around town, but the number of available units will not match last year's experience. Town council recently awarded the porta potty procurement to Dalton Jodrey Plumbing and Heating, but the agreement is based on reducing locations or the service period to bring the cost down to the $33,200 budgeted by the town. Dalton Jodrey Plumbing and Heating submitted the lowest of the two bids received, but both submissions were more than double what was budgeted. Additional cleaning requirements due to COVID-19 reportedly was the reason for the higher expense.

Elderly woman accidentally struck by vehicle near Hubbards

A driver will be subject to a licence review after he accidentally accelerated and struck his spouse in Mill Cove on May 7. Hubbards volunteer firefighters, RCMP and paramedics were summoned to the Highway 329 scene just before 2 p.m. The couple came home from running errands and the woman was hit after exiting the vehicle when the husband stepped on the gas pedal by mistake, law enforcement said. "While she did sustain injuries, they are not life-threatening," Cpl. Chris Marshall, a spokesman for the province's Mounties, told LighthouseNOW in an email. The driver was described as "elderly" and having health issues. "No charges are anticipated, but a license review was requested," Marshall said.

Dozens of litres of diesel fuel spills in Hebbville

A tank containing dozens of litres of diesel fuel fell off a one-tonne truck in Hebbville after the strap holding the unit broke. "The tank was dragging on the ground," Amelia Jarvis, a spokeswoman for the province's environment department, told LighthouseNOW in an email. Roughly 100 litres of fuel spilled on the pavement, she said. The incident occurred just before 3 p.m. near the corner of Highway 3 and Jubilee Road on May 6. Jarvis described the incident as "minor" in nature. "There was no sign of fuel in the wet area, mowed area, or drainage ditch," she noted. Provincial government agencies and the Hebbville volunteer fire department responded to the incident "and oversaw the removal of the fuel from the road," Jarvis added. A private environmental consultant company was retained and remediation efforts were underway May 10.
