Death is an inevitable part of life. Most people prepare wills for their estate to ensure their wishes for everything they've spent their lives working for, are met. But not everyone thinks of the future welfare of their beloved pets, especially if death occurs unexpectedly.

This week, I had a former SHAID adopter of a sweet little dog, ask me if Cutie would be able to come back to SHAID if something was to happen to her. Of course I said yes and I thanked her for taking the time to plan ahead.

But then we had an emergency arise over the past few days. An unexpected death of a young owner led to several dogs, cats, and rabbits without a home. Between SHAID, the SPCA, and a caring neighbour, we were able to place all 15 animals into rescue to rehabilitate and find loving forever homes.

Six cats and one dog are now at SHAID getting treatments, vaccinations, vet checks, and preparing for spay and neuter appointments; we anticipate every one of them becoming available for adoption within the next month.

You know your pet better than anyone else. You love your pet more than anyone else. You will be able to make the decision of where you want your pet to go, whether it be a family member or friend, a breed-specific rescue, or your local trusted shelter.

Death is an inevitable part of life. Please have a plan in place for your beloved pets. They will thank you for it.
