The 10th annual Gary L Wentzell March Break Tournament kicks off March 20 and features a record 72 teams in 12 divisions with players from the Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget age levels.
Organizer Devan Naugler said that he never imagined that the tournament would grow to this size after starting out with just four teams in the beginning 10 years ago.
The tournament is named after Gary L. Wentzell, a long-time volunteer with hockey on the South Shore.
"He still presents all the banners and medals at all the championship games," said Naugler. "It's pretty special. We named it after him, because we were looking for someone in the community that has been involved in hockey for a long time."
Wentzell was the face of hockey in the area for more than 50 years, beginning when he was a teenager keeping score.
In total, 130 games will be played at the Clearwater Seafoods Arena in Bridgewater; the Lunenburg Arena, and Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool. The action starts at 10 a.m. at all three locations and continues through to Sunday afternoon.
The event is hosted by the South Shore Minor Hockey Association. For more information you can go to the tournament website at https://glwtournament.weebly.com/.
